PDW Support / Re: PDW Command File error

Hi Mitch,

Bit hard without seeing the vba code and what line causes the error, and what the error is.

...and cheaper, more convenient, more reliable, faster delivery, much larger footprint (depending on paging infrastructure of course, but in Australia extensive). etc etc.

I suspect that data encryption was a major factor in emergency services moving away. Certainly wasn't cost - replaced with much more expensive mobile phone based messaging (heavy ruggedised phones - 2 phones per person, 1 on each carrier activated simultaneously in case one didn't work:-) )

Nice work Rene ;D

My decoding days are just about finished now, as the services I'm interested in have all gone digital and SMS alerting.

Doesn't mean my passion for PDW has declined - will be in my heart forever:-)

I have 4 x FSK to USB interfaces for sale if anyone wants to make an offer:-) Location Brisbane Australia.

Plus a Uniden 73XLT and a Uniden BC60XLT scanner for sale.

Discriminator Outputs / Re: Motorola GM radio

How are you connecting to the PC?
Have you tried it with a USB interface?

Wow - didn't even know you could turn mic permission off and on! Well done finding that one:-)

The usual cause (in my experience) of poor POCSAG decoding from a discriminator tap is low radio signal strength or quality. If you are sure the RF quality is good, then to get the best result you need the PDW USB interface, but you should be getting at least some successful decodes.

Hi,
Been a while since I've use the sound card, but from memory you may need to try a number of different settings?

Hi,
Please provide details of your hardware connections/setup from the RTL-SDR to the PC - how are you connecting the RTL-SDR to the PC? Is it a discriminator output from the RTL-SDR?

I'm going to be offline for a couple of weeks so hopefully someone else will be able to assist you in the meantime.

Suggest you have a good look through Rene's discriminators.nl site and the PDW documentation as well.

Cheers

Hi,
Can you provide more information of your configuration? eg for most reliable decoding you should use  discriminator tap and the USB interface. Radio signal strength is also a factor if the source is moving.

I have no knowledge of RTL-SDR, so that could be an unknown factor.

Rene already gave you the link in his post above:-)

[Edit - ooops - crossover with Rene's post - I'll leave mine here anyway!]

The random characters sound like corrupt messages - that would be what's causing your yellow triangle. Using sound is definitely sub-optimal if you are serious about decoding:-)

The ideal setup is with a discriminator tap and through the USB interface.

See https://www.discriminator.nl/order/index-en.html for details of the USB interface and how to do the discriminator tap.

Hi w1av.
I only have experience with POCSAG, so can't comment on the ACARS.
It usually means it isn't decoding the signal very well. In my experience this is most likely due to signal strength/quality or problems with the slicer.

Depending on your setup, you should be getting near 100% and full swing on the meter.

Can you describe your setup a bit more? scanner, discriminator tap or sound input, USB serial interface, PC OS, type etc?

PDW Support / Re: Pager decodes

Hi Markdarren.
Could be different system, different speed, different frequency - so many variables!  Do you know the system your local fire service use?

Doing it by capcode will be tedious, lengthy and get out of date frequently as they swap pagers out.
Another way is to search on a common string in the message. For example, all QAS pages start with "#:".

Thanks eccerr0r:-)

Rene, Just wondering if you are intending to add this to the database on Discriminator.nl (in your copious spare time ;D ;D)

Cheers
