PDW Support / PDW - email via SSL
« on: 27 Apr 2014, 09:48:05 »
Many SMTP servers only support secure SSL connections. Unfortunately, SSL is not supported by PDW. This results in an error message 'Must issue a STARTTLS command first'

Many users have requested to put SSL email functionality into PDW, but there's a different solution: stunnel.  stunnel provides an SSL connection between your PC and your provider's secure SMTP server.

Follow these steps to configure stunnel and PDW:
  • Download the installer executable
  • Run the installer executable
  • Run stunnel
  • stunnel comes preconfigured for smtp.gmail.com. For other providers, press 'Configuration - Edit Configuration' and change the line connect = smtp.gmail.com:465 with your provider's SMTP address and port. Save the configuration file and press 'Reload Configuration' from the Configuration menu.
  • Configure PDW to use IP address 127.0.0.1, port 25. This is your own PC aka localhost
  • Tick 'Enable Authentication and fill your username and password
  • Press 'Test' to verify that everything works fine

PDW Support / Start PDW automatically with Windows
« on: 25 Mar 2014, 06:44:01 »
The other day I got a personal message:

'I see your an admin for PDW, I was wondering if there is any chance you could add a option to the current v3.1 version of PDW to "Start with windows", So that PDW will automatically start when windows starts?, Is there any chance you could help me out?'

I answered:
' I facilitate hosting of PDW, but I don't have C++ skills.. By the way, it's implemented in Windows - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/run-program-automatically-windows-starts#1TC=windows-7 '

PDW Development / Linux 1600 bit/s FLEX Decoder
« on: 07 Jun 2013, 12:48:26 »
Today, a Linux P2000 (FLEX 1600) decoder has been announced on https://github.com/jbrunink/p2000scanner. It is partly based on the PDW source.

'P2000scanner is CLI-based *nix application written in C. It uses RS232 to communicate with a receiver (confirmed to work with Flexbox and FTDI-based RS232-USB converter). It can be used in several modes, it can decode all the received information and just present that, it can write all the decoded information to a file (JSON-formatted) and/or send it with ZMQ (pubsub implementation) to subscribers (also JSON-formatted).

At the moment p2000scanner only supports 1600-bit/2-FSK FLEX. (used in the Netherlands)

Discriminator Outputs / Icom IC-R20
« on: 15 Apr 2013, 06:59:43 »
After long hesitation, I have made a discriminator output on my IC-R20 yesterday. It requires some fine desoldering skills to take the receiver apart. Not recommended for the unexperienced or the faint of heart.

You can find a comprehensive description including disassembly details here.

PDW Development / PDW Open Source
« on: 01 Apr 2013, 05:59:45 »

Since 2003, Peter Hunt has developed PDW to the most important (free!) application to monitor POCSAG and FLEX. PDW has many users worldwide, from radio enthusiasts to professionals. Peter, thank you for all your efforts!

It has been decided recently to make PDW available as open source software. This enables others e.g. to enhance the functionality, or to develop a Linux version.

I have received the PDW source code from Peter. It will soon come online. Keep you posted!

Discriminator Outputs / Baofeng UV-5R
« on: 26 Mar 2013, 12:31:33 »
Some time ago, a Baofeng UV-5R passed my workbench. Unfortunately, it is not possible to modify this cheap handheld radio with a discriminator output. Read here why not.

discriminator.nl has been established in 2003. In the mean time, many scanners, receivers, pagers and (marine) VHF radios have passed my workbench for a discriminator tap modification. Next to that, many data slicers and interfaces found their way to users worldwide.

This site and related activities are a hobby. In my remaining spare time, I'm also an instrument rated pilot and a licensed radio amateur.
